On the Kings' trails

A tour from Mont Avic natural Park to Gran Paradiso national Park.

4 nights from € 690

Valid:

  • 27 June 2018 - 05 September 2018

The paths wind through one of the richest areas in the region for lakes and bodies of water. Set in unspoilt nature, you’ll get plenty of chances to admire the grace of a running chamois or the agility of an Alpine ibex on the rocks. At the height of its bloom, the flora is rich in brilliant colours that hold a special importance: they represent the adaptation of life to these harsh environmental conditions.

Trip itinerary

Day 1 – Aosta/Mont Avic Park
Meet the guide in Aosta (2:30 pm) and then travel in a reserved vehicle to Covarey (Chamdepraz). Talk through the itinerary and check the materials. Visit the Park’s Visitor Centre. Start trekking.
First stage: Covarey (1300 m) - Barbustel Refuge (2200 m)
Height difference: +900 m. Journey time: 3.00 hours.
Half board: dinner and overnight stay at the refuge
Barbustel Refuge at 2200 m in altitude is located on the border of three lakes, Bianco, Nero and Cornuto, nestled in between the rocks. The path mainly winds through forests of larches and mountain pines, the characteristic tree here and almost exclusive to the area.

Day 2
Breakfast at the refuge.
Second stage: Barbustel Refuge (2200 m) – Dondena Refuge (2190 m), through Col Fussy (2911 m)
Height difference: +/-720 m. Journey time: 5.00 hours. Half board: dinner and overnight stay at the refuge
Travel to Dondena Refuge (2190 m) through Col Fussy (2911 m), passing by Gran Lago – the largest natural basin in the Aosta Valley located at 2600 m – and other bodies of water surrounded by white tufts of cotton grass. The landscape here is truly unique, unlike the rest of the region. With every step you take, you get the feeling of being high up where every clump of earth torn from the rocks is full of clusters of sparse dwarf willows or tiny herbs.

Day 3
Breakfast at the refuge.
Third stage: Dondena Refuge (2190 m) – Miserin Lake/Refuge (2580 m)
In the evening: night-time excursion to explore the night sky.
Height difference: +300 m. Journey time: 2.00 hours.
Half board: dinner and overnight stay at the refuge
This rarely trodden path is higher up than the usual beaten dirt track but it is certainly more panoramic and will provide more opportunities to see an array of colourful flowers. You will often see stoats or rock ptarmigans in this area, the real masters of camouflage.

Day 4
Breakfast at the refuge.
Fourth stage: Miserin Refuge (2580 m) - Sogno Berdzé Refuge (2526 m)
through Col Fenêtre di Champorcher (2837 m)
Height difference: +250/-300 m. Journey time: 2h30.
Half board: dinner and overnight stay at the refuge
This pass marks the transition between two different regions: occasionally rugged, rocky landscapes are replaced by vast pastures and dells rich in shrubs.

Day 5
Breakfast at the refuge.
Fifth stage: Sogno Berdzè Refuge (2526 m) - Village of Lillaz/Cogne (1540 m)
Height difference: +20 m/-1000 m. Journey time: 5.00 hours.
Return to Aosta in a reserved vehicle. Leave for the journey back or continue your stay.
As you begin the long descent towards the bottom of the valley, you come to sun-dappled larch forests interspersed with Alpine glades. Torrents flow alongside the trail, turning into calm waterways over the flatter ground or into raging cascades down the slopes. At the end of the trail, the famous Lillaz falls greet the final steps of this truly special trek.
