9-4-2024: stage 5 of the Via Francigena is interrupted in Bourg (Donnas) due to material falling from above.

A stage offering a wealth of cultural heritage: the splendid parish church of San Martino ad Arnad, the two ancient bridges of Echallod and Bard, a hamlet dominated by the fortress, host to the Museum of the Alps, and above all the entrance to Donnas, along the Roman road “delle Gallie”, before completing this stage in front of the Roman bridge of Pont-Saint-Martin. Places to eat can be found at Hône, Bard, and Donnas. Fountains can be found scattered along the route.

Description of the route

14.9 km
From Verrès you walk along the foot of the terraced rock faces, used for vine growing. The route then crosses through Arnad, a location renowned for the lard DOP and its splendid medieval church, after which you carry on through Hône, to reach Bard. Here the fortress of Bard stands on a spectacular rock, a wonderful example of military architecture, made up of three outposts placed at different heights and dominating over the access routes to the Valley. The fortress is host to the Museum of the Alps and prestigious art and photography exhibitions.
The route leads on through the beautiful hamlet, where, in the Middle Ages, there were two almshouses for pilgrims. The road towards Donnas follows the longest remaining stretch of the Roman road “delle Gallie”, underlined by a particular vaulted passageway and paved directly and perfectly into the rock. The route then finally reaches Pont-Saint-Martin, where you can admire the magnificent Roman bridge constructed over the “via delle Gallie”. the final point on the Valdostana section of the Via Francigena route.
