Art et culture

Aosta, an art city… it is difficult to sum up all the the superb artistic treasures the town has to offer in just a few words.

Wherever you look, traces of the past hint at the ancient splendour of Augusta Praetoria, the city founded by the Romans, of which today we can still admire the magnificent Arch dedicated to the Emperor Augustus, the monumental Porta Pretoria gate, the Theatre and the cryptoportico, to mention just a few.

In the heart of Aosta we can also find some marvellous mediaeval monuments, Romanesque and Gothic masterpieces such as the Monumental Complex of Sant'Orso, with the cloister and the magnificent Cathedral recalling the splendour created by the benefactors of Aosta at that time.

Just a few kilometres outside Aosta, the atmosphere of the mediaeval court remains almost palpable in the Castle of Fénis, with its sublime frescoes.

Throughout the area, castles and towers today bear witness to how rich the region was way back in the Middle Ages, with examples to be admired in Quart, Nus and Saint-Marcel. The more recent past is testified to in the Royal Hunting Lodge in Sarre, which King Vittorio Emanuele II had built and inside which visitors can admire an unusual decoration made from ibex and chamois horns.

As regards craft activities in Aosta, the byword is the Ancient Craft Fair of Sant'Orso", a second replica version of which, the "Foire d'été", has been held since 1969 at the beginning of August.
