The town is located 486 metres above sea level, on a gentle hillside full of vineyards which are used to produce the famous “Rouge de Chambave” and “Chambave Muscat”.
It was definitely inhabited in ancient times, with traces of its Roman settlement preserved in its ruins and place names: the entrance to the presbytery hosts a milestone from the consular road dating from Roman times.
During medieval times it was attributed to the parish of San Lorenzo, which was mentioned as early as 1100. Of the Romanesque church only the lower part of the bell-tower remains, with the current one dating from the XVIII century.
There are a few surviving, elegant sixteenth-century buildings in the historic centre.
Chambave is home to where the wine producing coop, called “La Crotta di Vigneron”, has its offices. It is equipped with wine producing techniques that are among the most advanced in the field of oenology.
A grape festival is held each year, on the last Sunday of September. It is a real award show, in which wine producers present their best bunches of both white and purple grapes, presented in baskets. The occasion is enlivened with the participation of local, folklore groups.
Arriving in Chambave you cannot but notice how far the territory spans. Your eyes will be attracted to the spectacular vineyards that surround the town and which recall a tale of hard, yet passionate, work. You will also see the woodland that extends in the shape of a wedge, on the right slope of the Dora Baltea and which gently, at first, and then dizzyingly reaches Mont Ruvic and Avic.
The most interesting villages certainly are Chandianaz, with its nearby xerothermic area on serpentinite (SIC Site of European Community Importance) which is full of plant species of steppe origin and an area, which is unique in Valle d’Aosta, with a large number of growing orchids.
The real wealth of the town lies in its vineyards! Since ancient times the wine in this area was known and appreciated and the wine-making tradition continues with the help of a modern cooperative, the Crotta di Vegneron, which includes some of the most advanced wine-making processes to produce excellent wine, such as: Chambave Rouge, Chambave Muscat and Chambave Muscat Flétry.
