Ice climbing, Hockey, short track, curling and skating: sports activities on ice
Ice offers different opportunities for enjoyment, alone or in company.
During the coldest months of the year, when the waterfalls take on a different aspect, as they are transformed to ice, you can practice ice climbing; ice climbing takes place in plenty of the Valdostane valleys, in particular in Valle di Cogne, with over 150 waterfalls.
Some of these activities, such as curling, are back in fashion thanks to
the recent Olympic Games or are experiencing renewed interest. Skating, with different disciplines (speed, sail, figure, short track ), is instead an activity that has always been very popular. In fact, its origins date back to the Vikings! It is not an easy sport, however some of its aspects are almost iconographic of mountain resorts, with the exception of skiing. In winter, weather conditions
sometimes permit natural outdoor skating. In Cervinia, Gressoney and other districts, there are even skating pistes on natural ice, a fascinating alternative to many sports centres in the local tourist districts (in particular: Courmayeur and Aosta).
