Stretching towards the French region of Tarentaise, Valgrisenche (1,664 metres above sea level) offers visitors surrounding mountains covered in glaciers.
You can reach the sides of the valley with short walks such as those passing the Surrier and Miollet waterfalls, with long excursions, such as the tour around Ruitor, and ascents with various levels of difficulty. There are plenty of opportunities to free climb on the walls, just a short distance from the town.
Valgrisenche, the chief town in the valley, is a quiet, Alpine village. The particular micro-climate ensures there is always an abundance of falling, powdery snow.
The ski resort is particularly suited to beginners and families with children, and the cross-country pistes are developed and offer levels suitable to everyone’s ability and training. Instead, Bonne offers an equipped heliski base, which allows you to discover 50 extraordinary ski-mountaineering itineraries.
Valgrisenche still retains plenty of traces of its past. Worth seeing, the bell-tower completely made of stone erected in 1392, the parish church of San Grato totally renovated in 1872 with its sacred art museum, the churches of Sant?Anna (1639) in Céré, San Dionigi (1688) in Bonne and the church in Fornet, re-immerged in water when the artificial basin of the dam was partly emptied for safety reasons.
You are free to view the external part of the Beauregard dam, built in 1954, while the indoor guided tower is booking only.
You can go up to the mountain huts and see milk being processed, buy authentic Fontina from the local coop in La BĂ©thaz, visit the craft coop where women are still dedicated to the typical professions in this valley: the weaving of drap, a cloth made from sheep wool.
On the 5th of August each year, the Lago San Grato Valley holds the centuries old procession in honour of Madonna delle Nevi. And, to stay fully immersed in folklore, don’t miss the Batailles de Reines (cows) and TsĂ©vres (goats).
