There are areas in Valle d’Aosta where fishing is prohibited, others where no-kill fishing is permitted and still others that are game fisheries.
Areas other than these are known as “free” or public waters.

Fisheries are divided into:

• Game fisheries managed by the Fishing Consortium: costs and fishing rules may vary by fishery according to current regulations;
• Private fisheries: fishing rules and season dates may vary by fishery and are set by the concessionaries according to current regulations and concession contracts.

Some private lakes are also found in the area, usually suitable for children or beginners, where licenses are not required.

The Regional Fishing Consortium publishes the fishing calendar with rules and season dates in the various areas. They also list locations that issue fishing permits (some tourist offices, bars, stores, hotels, etc.).

Public fishing requirements in the Aosta Valley:

One of the following regional permits, issued by the fishing consortium or specific area offices:

• associate member card issued to Valle d’Aosta non-residents with valid government fishing license. There are discounts for juniors. These cards give holders the right to 60 fishing days and are valid from the end of March to the middle of October.
• fortnightly permit valid for 5 fishing days to be used within the fortnight, usually from the end of March to the middle of October.
• daily permit for fishing in free waters, valid for 8 catches;
• no kill daily permit, only for fishing in free areas; fish must be released back into the water;
• daily permit for summer or winter tourist fisheries managed by the fishing consortium
• no kill yearly permit for both residents and non-residents, only for fishing in free areas; fish must be released back into the water;

Member cards are usually issued until the end of May at the Sezioni Pescatori (Fishermen’s Offices) in the area and until the beginning of August at the Aosta Fishing Consortium office.

Children under 16 can fish without a license or permit provided they have a valid ID document and are accompanied by a fisherman with valid fishing documents.
In this case, the fisherman and child can only use one rod and must remain within the single quota restrictions. The fisherman with the valid fishing documents will be held responsible for observing all current regulations.
