Li Tsacolé d'Ayas
The sabot (“tsoque” in Franco-provencal language), traditional wooden shoes, are a representative element of traditional craft work in upper Val d’Ayas.
The trade of sabotier was once widespread because it allowed people to work through the long winter months, when farming work could not be done.
In order to make the most of this ancient art, the “Li Tsacolé d’Ayas” cooperative, together with the town of Ayas and IVAT (regional institution for traditional handicraft), set up a permanent exhibition where the new sabotiers show visitors the traditional technique for producing these typical local shoes, unveiling the secrets and particularities of this work.
