Giovanni Gnifetti

Mountain refuges - Gressoney-La-Trinité

The refuge is dedicated to the memory of Abbot Giovanni Gnifetti, parish priest of Alagna, explorer of Monte Rosa and first climber in 1842 of Signalkuppe, the peak that now bears his name.
Located at 3,467 metres on the Garstelet glacier (Monte Rosa) between Alagna and Gressoney, the refuge is a key base for ascents of Monte Rosa and Capanna Margherita, and its history is closely linked to that of the Varallo section of the Italian Alpine Club (CAI).
The Gnifetti Hut can be reached via a glacier route in about 1 hour and 45 minutes from the arrival point of the new Passo Salati-Indren lift at 3,275 metres, with a total ascent of about 370 metres.

Reservations are required. The use of a personal sleeping bag liner is mandatory
Please note: there is no running water in spring

How to get there in summer

On foot: from Staffal, follow trail 7, then 7B and finally 6A to the Mantova refuge, then another 100m of elevation gain across the glacier to Gnifetti (+100m) - crampons required
Elevation gain: approx. 1,700 m
Time: approx. 5h30
Difficulty: Experienced hikers
Terrain: Mountaineering

How to get there in winter/spring

Ski mountaineering: from Staffal, follow the summer trail in the Vallone della Salza (7 → 7B → 6A)
Elevation gain: approx. 1,700 m.
Time: approx. 5h30
Route: ungroomed and not subject to maintenance
Difficulty: experienced hikers with equipment

The route can only be tackled after checking the avalanche report and a rescue kit (Artva, shovel and probe) is mandatory.

By cable car to Gabiet: from Gabiet at an altitude of 2,300 m, follow trail 6A

By cable car to Punta Indren:  from Indren station. Cross the glacier (crampons required). Keep above the rocky ridge. Climb the equipped trail.

Orestes Hütte

The Orestes Hütte mountain hut is located at the foot of Monte Rosa, in the Conca di Indren, in the heart of the Monterosa Ski area.

How to get there in summer

On foot:
From Staffal  1825 m along trails 7A and 6B 
Walking time: approximately 3 hours

Elevation gain: approxy 775m

From Staffal 1825 m along trail 7C 
Walking time: approx. 3 hours
Difficulty:  E excurtion route
Elevation gain: approx. 790m

Staffal-Gabiet cable car. Upon arrival at the cable car, take trail 6B
Difficulty : E excurtion route
Elevation gain: approx. 300 m

How to get there in winter/spring

On foot/with snowshoes/ski touring: take the Staffal-Gabiet cable car and then follow the ski lift marked with green poles in the direction of the Salati pass. At an altitude of about 2,600 metres, follow the orange poles to the refuge, passing by the Indren dam.
Walking time:  about 1h30
Elevation gain: approx. 300 m

Quintino Sella Al Felik

The Quintino Sella Refuge, located on the Felik ridge, is situated on the Italian side of the Monte Rosa massif at an altitude of 3,585 metres.
It is the destination for picturesque excursions on Monte Rosa, including Castore and Lyskamm.
The refuge was built in 1885 by the Italian Alpine Club and dedicated to Quintino Sella. Over time, it was rebuilt, enlarged and moved several times due to deterioration and a major landslide in 1936. In the 1970s, modern facilities were added and plans began for a new, larger hut.

How to get there in summer

On foot: from Staffal, follow trail no. 1, then trail no. 9. The last part runs along the ridge on an equipped trail.
Elevation gain: approx. 1,700 m
Time: approx. 5.5 hours
Difficulty:  suitable only for experienced and well-equipped hikers.
Terrain:  mountaineering terrain not suitable for non-experts.

How to get there in winter/spring

Ski mountaineering: from Staffal, follow the summer trail in the Vallone della Bettolina (trail no. 1 then no. 9). The route is not groomed and is not subject to maintenance.
The last section is on the ridge, subject to cornices, with an equipped passage.
Elevation gain: approx. 1,700 m
Time: 5h30 
Difficulty: suitable only for experienced and well-equipped hikers.
Terrain: mountaineering terrain not suitable for inexperienced hikers.

The route can only be tackled after checking the avalanche bulletin. An avalanche rescue kit (Artva, shovel and probe) is mandatory.

With the lifts in summer/winter

Check the opening times of the lifts before setting off.

Take the Monterosa cable cars from Staffal to Colle Bettaforca. Follow trail no. 9. The last section is on the ridge with equipped passages.
Elevation gain: approx. 800 m
Time: 3 hours and 30 minutes
Difficulty: suitable only for experienced and well-equipped hikers.
Terrain: mountaineering, not suitable for inexperienced hikers.
