Mostly a rocky peak, it rises outstandingly over the Porta Nera or Schwarztor as the eastern pillar of the Breithorn Chain.
Its name comes from the dark color of the rocks, which are quite solid, while the top is covered by a cap of snow. It can be reached in a normal way passing by the Rossi and Volante bivouac, located at 3,750 meters at the foot of its South West snowy rise.
With the climb to the black rock you can start a long, interesting and panoramic route on the ridge of the Breithorn Chain, which allows you to touch, in a few hours, up to five peaks above 4,000 meters.
