From the earth to the moon: a journey through space and time in the Aosta Valley

50th anniversary of the first moon landing - 50th anniversary of the discovery of the megalithic area of Aosta

A series of events, scheduled for the month of July 2019, aims to commemorate the historic space enterprise and at the same time celebrate the archaeological heritage of the megalithic area of Aosta.

US astronaut Neil Armstrong, with the Apollo 11 mission, first set foot on lunar soil on 20 July 1969 and, a little over a month earlier, on 10 June 1969, archaeologists Franco Mezzena and Rosanna Mollo identified this archaeological site, fundamental for the knowledge of pre and protohistoric periods in the Aosta Valley, with findings that placed the region within an important cultural network at European level.
The initiative is an unmissable opportunity also to visit the megalithic area of Aosta, appreciating its extraordinary archaeological treasure with a journey through time of over 6,000 years.

Space exhibition
On display, at the megalithic area until July 30th, the model of the colossal Saturn V rocket, used to carry astronauts to the Moon, reproduced on a 1:10 scale (11 m long), and a 1:1 scale reproduction of the Columbia command module that housed the Apollo 11 crew. Visitors will be able to enter the Columbia capsule, feeling the thrill of being “astronauts for a day”. It will also be possible to see up close a meteorite fragment from the moon .
