At an altitude of 1047 metres, in a holiday resort positioned in a beautiful basin, closed in by wild looking harsh mountainous sides.
The parish church, dedicated to San Michele, was rebuilt at the start of the 1800’s and has a beautiful frescoed presbytery.
The Voury Sanctuary, dedicated to the Madonna delle Grazie can be found in the municipality, half way between the town of Issime and Gaby. The Sanctuary is particularly enchanting thanks to the layout of the Stations of the Cross, made up of shrines placed in a triangle at the top of the Sanctuary.
The poet Giosuè Carducci, who regularly came to the valley on holiday, wrote “L’ostessa di Gaby”, a poem in which he describes with an increasing melody, the beauty of the landscape and the gentleness of his young hostess.
Typically found in this area with a certain frequency, are the “Rascard”, wooden buildings of French-Provencal origin as well as other kinds of buildings done out completely in stone.
The particularly delightful Niel waterfalls can be easily reached in half an hour’s walk from Pianatz (track 7B). The waterfalls complete four further jumps and are a fabulous sight, in a particularly picturesque natural frame.
Crossing the nearby hills, that can be done in a few hours walk, the former inhabitants of the area used to trade or barter a little with the adjoining area of Biella.
A characteristic Alpine town, surrounded by, as yet uncontaminated nature, Gaby is also a French-provencal linguistic island enclosed within the Walser area where they speak two dialects of German origin.
