Positioned at the convergence of the Dora of Verney with the Dora of Coumayeur, the town is located at an altitude of 1001 metres.
It owes its name to the Latin “Prata ad Sanctum Desiderium” and developed where a military position once stood on the via delle Gallie, that passed through here.
Just a stone’s throw from the centre you can admire a delightful natural spectacle: the Ravine, a deep, extremely narrow gorge shaped by the rushing waters of the Dora of Verney. Alongside the waterfall you will find two spa water sources that spring from the rock respectively at 22° and 36°.
The town of Pré-Saint-Didier can, in fact, boast a well known spa system on its lands, built in 1834 and recently restored after being closed for 30 years.
The warm waters, rich in iron, coming from the Dora Verney, were popular with the ancient Romans who made good use of them. But it wasn’t until half way through the 1600’s that they became a popular spa tourism destination. The benefits of mineral salts (including silicon, arsenic acids, iron oxides and calcium carbonates) were already well known, especially for their anti-rheumatic benefits.
The Spa resort at Pré-Saint-Didier offers a vast range of amenities to visitors. Ranging from massages, to numerous jacuzzis and saunas (at 80 and 90 degrees). Furthermore, some parts of the resort offer a spectacular view of the Mont Blanc Alpine range, a magnificent spectacle offered by nature. The spa route offers 18 stop offs, all of them unique and unmissable, from water games to lights and colours.
The town’s parish church is dedicated to San Lorenzo and is a Latin cross construction dating back to the XI century. It was rebuilt in the 1800’s and then extended at the end of the last century. The bell tower alongside, is in Romanesque style and there is evidence that it is one of the oldest in Valle d’Aosta.
>From the main square, you can enjoy a fabulous view of the Mont Blanc massif.
Close to the most beautiful valleys in the Valdigne, Pré-Saint-Didier is an excellent departure point for a large number of excursions. In winter, the ski resorts of Courmayeur and La Thuile in close proximity offer ski lovers vast kilometres of slopes.
