Omaggio alla Donna mostra collettiva maschile

La cappella, ubicata nella parte di Aosta chiamata anticamente “Terziere della Bicheria”, si affaccia sull‘odierna via De Tillier, nel Medioevo importante arteria cittadina per il transito e le attività commerciali. La cappella invece, fu edificata con ogni probabilità nel XV secolo sotto il patronato del Capitolo della Cattedrale di Aosta. Nel settecento iniziò il suo declino fino alla cessione ai vigili del fuoco (1780) ed al susseguente utilizzo come magazzino: risale a questo periodo la distruzione parziale dell’affresco in facciata e della porzione superiore del portale per la realizzazione di un nuovo ingresso. Nella seconda metà dell’Ottocento la cappella fu utilizzata come sartoria e negozio di abbigliamento. La facciata è decorata da un affresco votivo offerto dal cittadino Malcastia nel 1512: sull’onda di un gusto tardogotico ormai destinato al tramonto, il dipinto rappresenta la Madonna col Bambino tra i santi Nicola, Caterina, Barbara e Margherita, cui fu aggiunto in seguito San Grato. Si tratta di una delle rare testimonianze della pittura di inizio Cinquecento in Valle d’Aosta. L’interno è costituito da un ambiente ad aula a pianta rettangolare, voltato a crociera a sesto acuto. I costoloni caratterizzano la sobria architettura tardogotica: essi si dipartono dalla chiave di volta per disporsi lungo i quattro angoli fino a poggiare sul pavimento. La parete absidale della cappella mostra un affresco risalente verosimilmente all’ultimo quarto del XVI secolo, menzionato per la prima volta in una visita pastorale del 1624. Al centro, un’elaborata struttura architettonica di gusto classicheggiante dipinta a trompe l’œil rappresenta una Pietà fitta di personaggi, ai piedi di tre imponenti croci. Alcune vetrine con ripiani e supporti sono state sistemate per l’esposizione del materiale archeologico rinvenuto durante gli scavi effettuati nelle fasi di restauro. Attualmente sconsacrata, la cappella, e stata concessa dal Comune di Aosta all’Associazione Artisti Valdostani, che l‘ha ribattezzata “Galleria San Grato” e si è proposta di tenerla aperta al pubblico 365 giorni l’anno allestendo settimanalmente mostre personali e collettive no stop.
