The valley that enchanted Queen Margherita of Savoy
Discover the enchanting tourist area of the Gressoney valley, also called the Lys valley due to the stream that runs through it, a true Alpine jewel that offers a vast range of outdoor activities in all seasons. Whether you are a winter sports or nature enthusiast, here you will find a paradise waiting to be discovered. In winter, the vast MonterosaSki area connects the slopes of the Gressoney valley with those of Val d'Ayas and Alagna in Piedmont.
Going up the Lys valley from Pont-Saint-Martin you will encounter welcoming municipalities, each with peculiar characteristics: Perloz, Fontainemore, Lillianes, Issime, Gaby, Gressoney-Saint-Jean and Gressoney-La-Trinité.
The valley extends up to the Monte Rosa massif and culminates with the vast chain that goes from Castore to Punta Gnifetti. The Capanna Margherita has stood here since 1893, the highest refuge in Europe at 4,554 metres above sea level.
Explore the picturesque Walser villages, where time seems to have stood still. These ancient villages jealously preserve the traditions, language and architecture of their ancestors, offering you an authentic experience. Museums, cultural itineraries and traditional events celebrate the culture and history of these places and the natural beauty of the Lys valley.
Taste the authentic flavours of the local cuisine and its delicious cheeses such as the Toma of Gressoney, which will delight your palate and make you feel welcomed by this land.

Patron Saint's Festival of St. John
Traditional celebrations - Gressoney-Saint-JeanThe festivities start on 23rd June after dusk with the lighting of the fires of Sankt Johanz. Every district in the town, one after the other, lights its own enormous bonfire, left to burn out completely. The inhabitants in the various villages then celebrate with a toast and “spisie” (typical snacks) awaiting the following day, the day of the Patron Saint. The Saint’s Day begins with a Mass, followed by a solemn procession in which many women wear traditional Walser costumes and the young folk carry a standard bearing a representation of the decapitated head of the saint. Those who turn 18 that year carry the statue, while a man of robust build carries the “great cross”. A special blessing, still very important to the locals, is then imparted to the children.
