Generations Along the Sky
A family story carved into the rock of the Matterhorn: Giuliano and Lucio Trucco, father and son, represent two generations of mountain guides and alpine rescuers in the Aosta Valley.
From the foundation of the rescue service (which celebrates its 50th anniversary) to the present day, an unbreakable bond connects them — a shared passion for the peaks and a life dedicated to those who love and live the mountains.
RAI TGR journalists Giorgia Porliod and Pietro Taldo followed them to Capanna Carrel (3,835 m) to retrace this timeless connection, enriched by rare archival footage.

Walter Bonatti Solo on the Matterhorn – 60 Years of an Extraordinary Feat
Sixty years in the making of a legend: between 18 and 22 February 1965, RAI documented Walter Bonatti’s solo ascent of the Matterhorn’s north face. A new route, opened alone, in full winter — an achievement many deemed impossible.
It was Bonatti’s final challenge in extreme mountaineering before dedicating himself to exploration and journalism.
Through his own words and those of renowned mountain guides Hervé Barmasse, Arnaud Clavel, and Laurent Nicoletta, we relive one of the most iconic moments in alpine history.
