The Elena refuge is a large and comfortable refuge-hotel, mainly frequented by hikers undertaking the Giro del Monte Bianco (Mont Blanc walk). The first refuge, which was destroyed by an avalanche, was built in honour of Queen Elena, consort of King Victorio Emanuele III.
It is in a pleasant location half way up the mountain, characterized by vast pastures and spectacular views. The eye-catching Pré de Bard glacier will take your breath away.

Accessibility

As a result of the mapping carried out in 2023 as part of the "Lo sci per tutte le abilità" (Skiing for everyone) project, the following was found:

• The entrance to the building is provided by a sheet-metal ramp that guarantees adequate manoeuvring space for wheelchair users
• The toilets on the ground floor are equipped with suitable aids
• With sufficient advance notice, the owners can provide transport for people with reduced mobility and/or sensory impairments to enable them to access the hut via the rural road

Courmayeur motorway exit. After the Courmayeur motorway exit carry on towards the Traforo del Monte Bianco (Mont Blanc Tunnel) for approximately 4 km going past the hamlet of Entrèves. On the last hairpin bend before the tunnel it is possible to exit the main road and go onto the road which leads to Val Ferret. About 6 km away in Lavachey is the last useful car park (for a fee).  Val Ferret is a restricted traffic zone.
The refuge can only be reached on foot in summer.

The nearest train station is in Aosta.
