The Capanna Aosta Refuge situated on a ridge east of the end section of the Tza de Tzan glacier, on the summit of the Valpelline, is owned by the C.A.I. (Italian Alpine Club) of Aosta and is a very interesting destination for all those wishing to savour the temptations of the Alps from close range, passing close to imposing glaciers which are now shrinking. It is the starting point for numerous mountain itineraries.
How to get there in summer
On foot: Starting from the dam at Place Moulin (1,980 m), follow trail 9 to Prarayer. Then take trail 10/10A to the refuge. Please note: the final section is classified as EEA – a hike for experienced hikers with equipment.

How to get there in winter / Spring
Please note the road closure order from Bionaz to the dam
Check the avalanche bulletin; a rescue kit (Avalanche Transceiver, shovel and probe) is mandatory.
Ski mountaineering: from the Place Moulin dam, head to Prarayer following the summer path (possibly by bike, if the road is clear), or walk 5–6 km on flat ground. Just past the Prarayer refuge, ascend along the right-hand side of the valley following the summer path, or along the left-hand side crossing the small bridge and leaving the obvious hill blocking the valley on your left. Under no circumstances (whether ascending or descending) should you enter the gorge!

How to get here
By car
Aosta Est motorway exit.
Follow the signs for theTraforo del Gran San Bernardo (Gran San Bernardo Tunnel)(green signs) which after a short distance take you to the mouth of the tunnel which links with strada statale (main road) 27. Straight after the tunnel exit go right at the junction following signs for Valpelline, Diga di Place Moulin (Place Moulin Dam). Carry on along the regional road for a few Km until you reach the town of Valpelline. Go past the petrol station on the right (the last service station in the valley) carry on uphill until you reach the junction for Bionaz on the right, level with the hairpin bend. Having gone over the junction carry on along regional road 28 which first of all goes through the town of Oyace and, after a short distance uphill, you will reach the upland plain of Lexert with a lake of the same name. Carry on, just before you reach the centre, on the left, you will come across the junction for Place Moulin and the dam of the same name. Carry on along the road which goes uphill until you reach the large parking area close to the dam where you can leave your car.
By public transport
The nearest train station is in Aosta. The bus station is in front of the train station.
Scheduled Coach service as far as Bionaz (approximately 4 trips a day, excluding Sundays).
