Situated at the foot of the north-west face of Gran Paradiso, in the heart of the National Park, the Federico Chabod Mountain Hut 2710 m  is regarded as the starting point for the standard route up Gran Paradiso and for the north-west face, and enjoys spectacular views across the entire massif.

A stopover on the Tor des Glaciers route, the refuge is comfortable and well-equipped. There is a small climbing wall nearby.

The refuge was awarded UNI EN ISO 14001 certification in October 2001.

 

How to get there in summer

On foot:
Leave your car in the car park at Loc. Pravieux, cross the Savara stream and take route no. 5. The path alternates between larch forests, wide meadows covered in flowers and wilder areas as you approach the final elevation.

Duration: approx. 3 hours

How to get there in spring

Ski mountaineering / snowshoeing: follow the summer route of trail no. 5. Once you reach Alpe Lavassey, the route turns right and continues uphill to the refuge.
Always check the avalanche report before setting out. It is compulsory to carry an avalanche rescue kit (ARTVA, shovel and probe).

How to get here

By car

Aosta Ovest-Aymavilles motorway exit.
At the motorway exit go straight on towards Aosta until you reach the roundabout: turn left here and carry on along strada statale (main road) 26 towards Mont Blanc going past Sarre castle on your right and past the town of Saint-Pierre.
Keep going straight on along the main road and you will arrive at Villeneuve. Having gone past the town continue along the entire straight stretch of the strada statale (main road) up to the junction for Introd-Rhêmes-Valsavarenche, turn right and go uphill until you reach Introd. Go past the town and, when you reach the next junction, turn left towards Valsavarenche and carry on uphill for approximately 12 km until you reach the centre of Valsavarenche, Dégioz. Carry on along the main road, just after you reach the hamlet of Pont you will see the parking area on the left. 

By public transport

The nearest train station is in Aosta.
Scheduled Coach service as far as Pont (approximately 3 trips a day).
