Tollbooth of Aosta. Continue on the statale or state road towards the city until you reach the intersection for Pila to the left. Continue towards the roundabout of Pollein and then go right towards Charvensod. At Pont Suaz turn left and then immediately right. You continue until you reach the parking area of Pila where the road ends.
The western crest of monte Emilius is a ferrata and at the same time a historic mountain climbing path towards the symbolic peak of Aosta that, from its 3500 meters, watches over the city. It is a journey that will bring you to one of the most spectacular and magnificent peaks of the Vallée.
From the upper parking area you pass in front of the skiing school and then the “Chalet du Soleil”. You continue right intercepting the 19a path that leads to the left, towards Alpe di Chamolé. Once you’ve reached the mountain cottages, at the fountain, continue to your left on a dirt road. You quickly reach a little path that breaks off to the right (20a trailmarker). You first continue in ascent then on a flat road until you reach Plan Fenetre where you will see a cross. Continue descending to the left towards Comboé. You reach the valley and, after the cottages, looking towards the river to the left you continue until you reach a fork in the road. You continue to the right towards Col Carrel (16a trailmarker). The path becomes a trail amongst the bracken and goes up until it reaches the hill where the bivouac is located. You continue to the right on the crest with the facility in the back. You pass the first part of debris, following a few markers that take to the fastenings, slightly to your left. You continue in blocks until you reach the top at the first gendarme. A fully equipped trestle bridge, somewhat hung in the air, connects the following peak. You proceed along the trail with difficult and vertical steps until you reach the Mont Ross de Comboé at 3285 meters.
Once you’ve crossed the summit you continue on a plane, on a simpler ground. There is an escape route, marked by a sign to the right, that connects to the frozen lake. You continue to climb up until you reach Petit Emilius (3342 meters) and continue on the crest where it winds to the right, first on reddish steps, then on a more light colored crumbly vertical rocky path. The ferrata ends at the last spur. You continue for another ten minutes on morainic rock until you reach the top. The descent is on the southern crest, following the path that leads to the passo dei Tre Cappuccini and from there, to the right, going down towards lago Gelato (or frozen lake). The trails lead to the refuge of Arbolle and from that facility, going upwards, to the colle di Chamolé, then down towards the lake bearing the same name then to the left towards the skiing facilities of Pila (...or to the right to the path that takes you back to the starting point).
To safely climb this via ferrata we recommend that you be accompanied by a mountain guide.
