There are two Gressoneys: Gressoney-Saint-Jean (1385 m.) has developed into a major, elegant tourist resort thanks to its splendid setting at the centre of the plain. At the same time, however, it has managed to preserve those features characteristic of its German origins, not least of all the “titsch” dialect
Gressoney-La-Trinité (1637 m), on the other hand, is a more alpine resort. This extraordinarily enchanting little town has also maintained intact its distinctive traditions, with the Walser community spirit still very much alive there. Over the last 30 years the two villages have begun to discover their potential for winter tourism, and boast a large number of lift facilities for those who come here to ski.
In Gressoney-Saint-Jean (1345 m) skiers will find the Weissmatten runs. This area is part of Monterosa Ski. It is not particularly large (one chairlift, one cableway, one Baby Snow Park with two magic carpets), but it features runs suitable for all kinds of skiers. The “Leonardo David” competition run and the “black” run that snakes through a wood of Cembran pine, are especially popular with expert skiers looking for a challenge, while there is a blue run and a red run to keep other skiers happy. The cableway and the snow park are popular with beginners and children looking to learn to ski and have fun on the snow.
The Weissmatten area is linked with the rest of the runs in the ski area by a 10 minute ski-bus service.
