This trail was taken and much lauded by the great Russian writer Leo Tolstoy on 20 June 1857, during the crossing from Gressoney to Brusson. Col Ranzola provides a sweeping view over the borders of Val d’Aosta, with a full panorama from Mont Blanc to Mount Rosa.
The panorama widens further from Punta della Regina, named after Queen Margaret who climbed the mountain in August 1898.

Description of the route

From Estoul, in the municipality of Brusson, follow the road that is closed to vehicle traffic and cuts across the southern slope of Mont Ciosé. After a moderate climb, you come to the pasture of Praz-Barmasse where the road ends. Continue along route 7, which takes you onto the saddle of Col Ranzola, which separates Val d’Ayas from Val Gressoney. Now follow the grassy crest on route 7A towards the right to reach Punta Regina at an altitude of 2387 m. The descent starts here on route 9B towards Col Garda.
